Originallly Mary Louise but couldn't deal wth it. So I changed it slightly by eliminating the letters y-o-u. It's still a combo of my grandmother Marie and my mom Louise.

Wow! I never thought there would be that many more Marlise's out there! I've only ever met another Marlis (Switzerland) and a Marlyze (S. Africa)! It's known as a bit of an old fashioned Alpine name over here. From what I've heard/researched it's a contraction of Mary-Elizabeth. Aaanyway, it's good to see that there are so many of us! Definitely a good thing :) All of you take care!

I found this page when I was Googling for the meaning of my name. One site said "bitter", which seems a bit unfair, but then I found a much nicer meaning on this site: "kind to all creatures" - I like that, being a Zoologist. I was named after my great-aunt-twice-removed Marlies, and I know various others: one Marlies sister of a school friend, Marlize a work associate, Marlize the wife of an ex-colleague, Marlize some girl in my childhood, and I've read at least two German short-stories featuring a Marlies. My nickname at school and university was always something to do with maize: Mielies (the Afrikaans word for maize), Melis (a local German slang word for maize), Mealie Pips, Meals, etc. My email name is of course the botanical name for maize.

This is such a neat sight! My mother was reading a love novel when she was pregnant with me. The name of the Heroine in the novel was Marlise. She loved the name and so gave it to me.

Yes! I am another Marlise. I'm 37 years old an when my father was stationed in either Manheim OR Hamburg Germany in the 50's he met a drummer named Marlise Baer (I hope I spelled that right)However she went by the name "Rosie" beause she thought is sounded more Americanized. I have never been sure is she was an old girlfriend or not but my parent liked her name so much they named me after her. I also once met a woman while I was working as a cashier in a grocery store when I was 19 Her name was also Marlyse although she spelled it different than I do She said she used to spell it Marlise but like how the named looked spelled with a "y" in it. Most recently at work (takeing catalog order by phone) I met yet another Marlis (no "e" on the end) we were both so surprised to meet another Marlise. I am also happy I found this site now I can meet more Marlise's.
Look how many languages we spear!

I was really surprised to come across this unique site. Since I'm Afrikaans, I assumed that Marlise was mostly an Afrikaans name. Apparently not! Very cool site, though! Ek hou daarvan!!!!

I was told my name was a contraction of Marie Louise and that is the actual name on my birth certificate.I quickly became Marlies when my mother met a woman with that name. I love it's uniqueness.

My German mother changed her name from Martha to Marlis. She liked an actress who had spelled the name this way. She liked the name enough to give it to me. Hello to all with this name & its variations.
