I never knew there were so many people with my name. I was named after my aunt from
Germany. She spelled it Marlies, my mother changed it so it would not be mispronounce in America. I was told the name is German and comes from Marie Louise. But from what I see it comes from many places and name combinations.

I think the Marlise Club is a great idea! It's nice to know that I'm not the only one out there with such an unusual name. I got the name from an old friend of my mother's. She liked the name so much that when I was born she gave it to me.

Let's start our own network!

I was supposed to be a "Marlies", which is a very formilar name in
Holland. But then my cousin was borned just 2 weeks before me and the called her "Marlies". My mother was very upset but she didn't give up and took the 'e' out! THANK GOD, I like Marlis much better!!!!!! p.s I'm sorry for any spelling-mistakes

I know I'll never walk into a souvenir shop and find a keychain with "Marlise" on it, and I certainly didn't ever expect to encounter a Marlise Club! What a great idea! Thanks.

What a surprise!! I played a little bit on the computer and wrote my name done on the google.com website. And there are so many of us!! I never met a 'Marlise' in
Holland or anywhere else. I only once heard it on TV, but that was also the last time. My parents like to ski and some years ago there was a 'famous' ski-athlete named Lise-Marie. My parents liked it better the other way round and so do I. We should be proud of such a rare name.

My mother was friends with a Dutch girl named Marlise when she was younger and loved the name. It was just by pure coincidence that she married a Dutch man whom obviously loved the name!

We continue. . .

My mother had naming privilege for girls as my father had jurisdiction for naming sons. I was the last and my Mom had chosen the name Marie Claire. Her friend and neighbor, however, Dorlise (Doreen Louise) pleaded that she change the name to Marie Louise so that I could be called “Marlise” for her. I had the pleasure of making Dorlise's acquaintance when I was a young woman and she was a mentor, and friend. I’ve gone by the name Marlise all my adult life. It’s is unusual and I delight with it and far prefer it to Marie-Louise. Love the web page.

This is great to have a site with just our name. I spell my name Marlies even though the guy who wrote my birth certificate had decided it should be Marlise. In
Switzerland that would have changed the pronunciation of my name. Also living in Canada and basically any English speaking country I had to change the way I pronounce my name. In Switzerland the accent was on the first syllable, now I place the accent on the second syllable and people suddenly understand my name. I got my name because my parents liked it. Plain and simple. By the way I found it difficult to read your guestbook as your background is too strong. Have a wonderful day! Marlies I have my own website called Marlies' Creative Universe, but nobody would know how to spell my name so my domain name is (edited).com.

I have had comments all my life about my name, where it comes from and what it means. I only thought of looking on the net a week or so ago. I was so amazed at how many "Marlies'" are. I have had a comment that the name comes from a abbreviation of Maria Louise. But if anyone has any further information I would be appreciative. I have been told by several people here in NZ that it is in fact Dutch.
