Having a "strange" name is fun!
There's no rationale for this page, but it's probably the only place in the world where our name isn't mispronounced or misspelled. Alternative spellings like Marlis or Marlys or Marlies, however, are just fine, as are the various Mailis names. It's a place to tell where YOU got this strange name and what you're doing for the world.

Marlise Club began in 1999
I was learning to write HTML and using Paint Shop Pro, so graphics was my game. I signed up for a free Web site at Third Age (home pages discontinued on March 31, 2008), threw a little poetry and pictures on it, and lo! also a little page where I asked if there were any other Marlises out there. What great pleasure I had reading the comments in the Guest Book -- at least until I got dozens of crank messages.
However, I've now edited the Guest Book and taken out last names and e-mail addresses to protect us. You can see the comments starting here.
In the meantime. . .
We've lost the cool clouds and unicorn and my primitive graphics that took forever to load, but here's what the original site said.
I'll go first, if you like. My name came from my Estonian grandmothers, Maria and Liisa, via a diplomatic mother. By the way, I moved back to Colorado from the beautiful Berkshire Mountains in New England, and now that I've settled in, I can play with this page a little more.
Surfing one day, I came across a Marlise Mason, who had created some wonderful paintings. She wrote about her name,
"Mine is from my mother, Marie, and her sister Elise. My middle name is from her other sisters, Dorothy and Irene so I ended up with Marlise Dorene. They are Japanese and were given those names before attending school."
One of the first Marlises to come forth:
Marlise, that fabulous dancer from Vancouver, has been living in Holland since September 1999. Her story:
...When my Mother was very pregnant with me...just a few days before I was born (January 22), she was shopping in the little town's only jewellery store. She was wearing a big winter coat and she had a big belly. ( I weighed 10 lbs. at birth.) Sha was looking at the different objects, and at one point as she turned around and with her big belly she knocked over a whole counter display! She was highly embarrassed. (She just moved to this town and knew no one.) However, another woman shopping quickly came over to help Mom. They succeded in rearranging and went for coffee afterwards.
They became friends. Her name was Marlies. A few days later I was born, and I surprised everyone (especially Mom) by being a girl. Everyone, including the doctor, was so sure that I was a boy, and my name was to be John. My parents never thought of a girl's name. Mom thought of her new friend Marlies, but spelled it 'lise" because it is French and we are part French. And my name is a combination of Mary Elizabeth.
Here's another!
I am named after my German godmother Marlies. My mother thought Marlise was more American. I like being truly different from everyone and can go by just my first name!!! I work for the largest telecommunications company in the state of Alaska. I talk with people from around the state every day.
I haven't run into too many Marlises up here!!! I have emailed other Marlises, but with no sucess. I would like to keep in touch with other ladies that I share a special bond with. Please let me know if that is a possibility!!
Another continent joined the list!
Here's my e-mail friend Marlise from South Africa. It looks as if we span the world, ladies.
I'm from South Africa and 23 years old. I didn't realize that there were so many Marlises around the world. Especially since I thought Marlise was an Afrikaans name. My home language is Afrikaans, and I don't know one English speaking person in South Africa with our name. My mother had a friend with the name Marlise; my mother loved the name. The weird thing is my one granny's name was Maria and the other was Elizabeth so my mother (the quick thinker that she is) told them it was a combination of their names. And they were both thrilled.
The Marlise Club thrives!
This is really getting to be fun. Let's find some others with our name, no matter how it's spelled. Actually, there's a man(!) named Marlis Smith in Denver, Colorado. Anyone know how he got his name?
